KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
A Kansas City woman is pleading for a second chance to stay in the U.S. after living half her life in the country and raising two American-born children.
The woman, who asked to be identified only as “S” due to fears of deportation, said she has lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years after arriving as a child. “I came here when I was little, around 13. I am 33 now,” she said. “I’ve lived half my life here in the U.S.”
S said she constantly lives in fear that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents could detain her at any moment. “It could happen at any moment, and I am very frightful,” she said. “I’ve been so worried that my life could change at any moment.”
Her fears stem from a missed immigration court hearing in 2012 that resulted in a final order of removal, meaning she is no longer allowed to remain in the country and could be deported. “All I ask is to give me a chance to plea my case,” she said. “I was so young; I made one mistake.”
